Gynecomastia is the condition where the breast area in men enlarges to resemble a female-type appearance. This enlargement can result from an increase in fat tissue, the growth of breast tissue, or a combination of both.

Factors such as genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances, liver diseases, long-term use of certain medications, alcohol consumption, and excessive weight play a significant role in the development of gynecomastia. This condition can cause not only aesthetic discomfort but also lead to a loss of self-confidence and social withdrawal in men.

Gynecomastia in Adolescence

In adolescent boys, temporary breast enlargement may occur due to hormonal changes. In most cases, this condition resolves on its own around the age of 17–18, and no treatment is necessary. However, if breast enlargement persists into adulthood, it is considered permanent gynecomastia, and surgical treatment should be considered.

While exercise or weight loss may reduce the appearance of gynecomastia to some extent, gynecomastia caused by breast tissue enlargement cannot be corrected with diet and exercise.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery involves the surgical removal of excess fat and/or breast tissue that causes an aesthetic issue in male breasts. Through this procedure, men can achieve a flatter, more aesthetic breast shape without having to hide it.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Before the surgery, a detailed examination is conducted to determine whether the breast enlargement is due to fat tissue, breast tissue, or both. Based on this, the appropriate method is planned.

Fat Tissue Dominant Gynecomastia

In cases where fat tissue is the main cause of gynecomastia, liposuction is the preferred method. Using ultrasound-assisted techniques, the fat tissue is broken down and liquefied, then vacuumed out with fine cannulas. The incisions made during this process are only a few millimeters in length, and they leave no visible scars after healing.

When Both Breast Tissue and Fat Tissue Are Present

When breast tissue growth accompanies the fat accumulation, surgical excision is performed. The incision is made in a half-moon shape along the natural transition line between the areola and the skin, making the scar invisible from the outside. With this method, excess breast tissue, fat, and, if necessary, excess skin are removed to contour the breast area.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 1–2 hours. The patient is usually discharged on the same day or the next day.

Post-Surgery Recovery Process

  • Mild pain may occur in the first days, but it can be easily controlled with painkillers.

  • The breast area is supported with a special bandage or corset.

  • Showers can be taken 2 days after the surgery.

  • Office workers can typically return to their daily activities within 3–4 days.

After the first week, light physical activities may be resumed. However, it is recommended to wait for 1 month before doing weightlifting or intense chest exercises. Wearing a corset for approximately 1 month is important for the breast to fully achieve its final shape.

In the first few months after surgery, a slight firmness may be felt in the breast area. This sensation decreases over time, and within about 6 months, the breast area will fully regain its natural and aesthetic appearance.

Does Gynecomastia Recur?

Gynecomastia surgery provides permanent results. However, in cases of significant weight gain, hormonal imbalances, or heavy alcohol consumption, there is a rare risk of recurrence. The likelihood of recurrence is very low if healthy lifestyle habits are maintained.
