Liposuction (Fat Removal)
Private MEVA Hospital
Liposuction is a procedure in which fat tissue accumulated in specific areas of the body, resistant to diet and exercise, is removed using special cannulas and a vacuum system. This method helps to create more balanced and aesthetic body contours. Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, but rather a body contouring (contour correction) procedure.
Expected Results from Liposuction
The success of liposuction is directly related to the skin elasticity of the person, their current weight, and the realistic expectations from the procedure. It should not be considered a miraculous weight loss method.
With diet and exercise, the volume of fat cells decreases, but the number of cells does not change. Liposuction, on the other hand, permanently removes fat cells from the body, reducing the number of fat cells in those areas.
Areas Where Liposuction Can Be Applied
Liposuction can be safely applied to many different areas of the body:
Abdomen and waist area
Hips and thighs
Inner and outer knees
Ankles
Arms
Breast area (in suitable patients)
Face and chin area
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Liposuction?
The ideal candidates for liposuction are:
Individuals close to their ideal weight or slightly above it
Those with localized fat deposits that cannot be reduced by diet and exercise
People with tight and elastic skin
Those with general health conditions suitable for surgery
Smoking and skin quality are important factors that affect the results.
Are Liposuction Results Permanent?
As long as the individual maintains their weight, the results achieved are permanent. If weight gain occurs over time, fat accumulation in the liposuction-treated areas will be more limited compared to the past, and weight gain will be more evenly distributed across the body.
Surgery Duration and Anesthesia
Liposuction usually takes between 1 to 3 hours depending on the area to be treated. The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia is determined based on the scope of the procedure.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction is performed using special cannulas of different thicknesses. Since the incisions where these cannulas enter are very small, noticeable scars do not form after the procedure.
Today, there are different liposuction techniques available:
Vaser Liposuction
Laser Liposuction
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction
Wet (tumescent) and dry liposuction methods
At our center, the Vaser Liposuction technique is preferred and applied to our patients.
Post-Surgery Process
Pain is generally mild after surgery and can be controlled with painkillers.
Patients are usually discharged on the same day or the next day.
Returning to daily life is generally possible within 2–3 days.
Swelling and bruising may occur in the treated areas, but this usually subsides within 2 weeks.
The final results may take 6–12 months to appear.
During this period, massage therapies and supportive treatments may be recommended.
Corset Use and Lifestyle
To enhance the effectiveness of the procedure and support shaping, wearing a corset for about 1 month post-surgery is recommended. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise habits is crucial for preserving the results.
Possible Complications
While liposuction is generally safe, rare risks may occur. Fat embolism is a very rare risk. To minimize this risk, early movement after surgery is advised.
In the long term, the most important issues that may arise are insufficient skin elasticity or the formation of undulating and hollow areas due to uneven fat removal. Therefore, the procedure must be performed by experienced surgeons with proper patient selection.
