Breast Reduction
Private MEVA Hospital
Overly large breasts are not just an aesthetic issue; they can lead to significant problems that affect daily life and health. Many patients who opt for breast reduction surgery do so not just because of concerns about their appearance but also because of physical discomfort.
Especially in younger women, noticeably large breasts can cause a loss of self-confidence, social withdrawal, and psychological issues. Additionally, the weight of large breasts puts pressure on the skeletal system. This can lead to health problems such as:
Neck and back pain
Posture problems and spinal curvature
Increased risk of herniated discs
Nerve compression in the shoulders and arms, leading to muscle weakness
In patients with osteoporosis, this burden is even greater. The permanent solution to these complaints is often breast reduction surgery.
How Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?
The main goal of breast reduction surgery is to reduce the breasts to an ideal size while achieving a shapely, symmetrical, and uplifted appearance. Therefore, the measurements, drawings, and planning process before the surgery are crucial. Proper planning directly impacts the success of the final result.
In this procedure, known as reduction mammoplasty:
Excess skin tissue
Breast tissue
Fat tissue
In some cases, part of the milk glands
are removed to reduce the volume of the breasts. At the same time, the breasts are reshaped and lifted. If the areola (the dark area around the nipple) is large, it is reduced to achieve a more aesthetic appearance.
Do Breast Reduction Surgery Scars Remain?
The scars from breast reduction surgery vary depending on the individual, the technique used, and the amount of reduction. The scars are usually located around the areola and in the inframammary fold (under the breast). They may form in T, J, or L shapes. These scars, which are more noticeable and pink-red in the first few months, will gradually fade and become less noticeable over time. The scars are typically planned to be hidden under the bra or bikini line.
Surgery Duration and Hospital Stay
The duration of the surgery depends on the size of the breasts and the surgical technique used, but it generally lasts 2–4 hours. The operation is performed under general anesthesia.
Patients are usually discharged after one night in the hospital.
Post-Surgery Process
During the post-surgery period, the following points should be considered:
Drains may be placed in the breast areas, which are usually removed 1–4 days later.
Mild to moderate pain may occur in the first 1–2 days, which can be controlled with painkillers.
Swelling and bruising around the breasts may occur, usually reducing within 2 weeks.
To reduce swelling and support the breasts, wearing a special medical bra is recommended. Office workers can typically return to work after 4–5 days. Heavy exercise and lifting should be avoided for the first 3–4 weeks.
It can take 6–12 months for the breasts to fully take their final shape and for swelling to completely subside.
Can You Breastfeed After Breast Reduction Surgery?
During breast reduction surgery, some milk ducts may be removed in certain cases. As a result, breastfeeding capacity may be affected. Scientific studies report that approximately 10–20% of women may experience an impact on breastfeeding function. This should be thoroughly discussed with the patient before the surgery.
Risk Groups
As with any surgical procedure, the recovery process should be closely monitored in certain patient groups. Specifically:
Diabetic patients
Those with systemic diseases
Patients with vitamin and mineral deficiencies
Smokers
These patients are at risk for delayed wound healing and more noticeable scarring. They should be informed about the potential risks before surgery.
