DHI hair transplant, which stands for “Direct Hair Implantation,” is an advanced and controlled hair transplant method. In this technique, hair follicles are implanted using the Choi implanter pen, which is only used by specialists trained in this field. Unlike traditional methods, there is no need to open channels before placing the hair follicles.

In the DHI technique, the placement of hair follicles and channel creation occur simultaneously. This reduces the number of steps in the procedure, shortens the time hair follicles spend outside the body, and enhances patient comfort. While the FUE method involves a three-step process, DHI hair transplant is completed in two steps.

The main goal of this method is to increase hair density in the transplant area, maintain a natural look, and allow hair transplant without shortening the existing hair. This enables the patient to return to daily life much faster.

How Is DHI Hair Transplant Performed?

DHI hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure can be planned with or without shaving the patient’s hair, depending on their needs.

  • Hair follicles are collected one by one from the donor area using micro motors.

  • The collected follicular units are placed into the special chamber of the Choi pen.

  • The hair follicles are transferred directly and controlled into the pre-planned transplant area.

The Choi needle creates a micro channel while placing the hair follicle, ensuring that the follicle is placed into the scalp at the desired angle and depth.

Choi Pen and Application Details

In DHI hair transplant, different Choi needles with varying thicknesses are used. The needle diameter is customized before the procedure based on the patient’s hair texture.

  • Typically, at least 2 Choi pens are used during the procedure.

  • An average of 10–12 different Choi tips are preferred.

  • The hair growth angle is set to approximately 40–45 degrees.

These details ensure the hair grows in a natural direction and maintain the aesthetic appearance after the transplant.

DHI Hair Transplant Steps

  • Local anesthesia is applied to the donor area.

  • Hair follicles are collected one by one and in a controlled manner.

  • The collected follicles are directly placed into the recipient area using the Choi pen.

The specially designed Choi pen safely transfers the hair follicles to the scalp without damaging the tissue. The pen’s tip is very thin and sharp, ensuring healthy tissue is preserved, allowing for denser implantation.

Reasons for Choosing DHI Hair Transplant

DHI hair transplant allows for the implantation of hair follicles immediately after collection. This offers the following benefits:

  • Increases the vitality of the grafts

  • Improves graft retention rate

  • Reduces the risk of follicle loss

Although this technique has been known for a long time, it has become more frequently preferred in recent years due to advancements in technology and increased expertise.

The procedure usually takes between 10–12 hours. Therefore, it is extremely important for the operation to be performed by an experienced and specialized team.

Advantages of DHI Hair Transplant

  • Channel creation and implantation are done simultaneously

  • Hair follicles do not stay outside for long periods

  • Allows for denser and more controlled implantation

  • Achieves a natural and dense appearance

  • Existing hair remains unaffected

  • Can be applied to patients with ongoing hair loss

  • The recovery process is fast

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for DHI Hair Transplant?

Before DHI hair transplant, the patient undergoes a detailed evaluation. Necessary tests and blood analysis are conducted to determine the patient’s general health and suitability for the procedure. The donor area is also analyzed in detail.

A personalized hair transplant plan is created, taking into account the patient’s age, type of hair loss, and potential future hair loss. This step is crucial for ensuring long-term patient satisfaction.

Post-DHI Hair Transplant Process

After DHI hair transplant:

  • Wound care and the first wash are performed on the first or second day.

  • The condition of the hair follicles is checked.

  • The first few days are the most sensitive period.

From the second day onwards, the patient can typically travel and gradually return to their daily life. The recovery process is generally more comfortable compared to other hair transplant methods.
