Gastric Bypass is a long-established surgical weight-loss method that has been safely used for the treatment of obesity for many years. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a fully equipped operating room. The patient must be fasting for at least 8 hours prior to the surgery. Preventive treatments are planned one day before the surgery to prevent clot formation.

Once the patient is sedated by the anesthesiologist, the necessary preparations are made, and the procedure is performed using the closed (laparoscopic) method. Through several small incisions in the abdominal area, a camera and special surgical instruments are inserted, allowing the surgery to be completed without the need for large incisions.

During the surgery, a small pouch is created at the upper part of the stomach, just below the esophagus. This new stomach volume is very small and significantly limits the amount of food that can be consumed. Then, approximately 200 cm of the small intestine is bypassed and connected to the new stomach pouch. As a result, the food bypasses most of the stomach and the first part of the intestine, entering the digestive system.

At the end of the surgery, the strength of the connections made is checked with special tests. Once it is confirmed that there is no leakage, the incisions are closed, and the procedure is completed. No part of the stomach is removed from the body during the procedure.

What Is Gastric Bypass?

Gastric Bypass is one of the most commonly applied obesity surgery methods worldwide. Weight loss occurs through two main mechanisms:

  • Reducing the volume of the stomach

  • Partially reducing nutrient absorption

The newly created small stomach is directly connected to the small intestine. The ingested food bypasses most of the stomach and reaches the intestine. This leads to faster satiety with smaller amounts of food and a reduction in calorie intake.

Who Is Suitable for Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric Bypass is typically a suitable surgical option for:

  • Individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35

  • Patients with type 2 diabetes

  • Individuals who consume sugary foods, high-calorie snacks, carbonated drinks, and alcohol heavily

  • Patients who have been unable to achieve permanent weight loss through diet and lifestyle changes

The suitability decision is made by the physician after a detailed evaluation.

Post-Surgery Hospital Stay

After the surgery, patients are generally monitored in the hospital for 2–3 days. During this time, oral fluid intake is started. If no issues are observed during follow-up, drains are removed, and the patient is discharged.

What to Expect After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

After surgery, even with very small portions, patients experience rapid satiety. Over time, this leads to a decrease in appetite and a prolonged feeling of fullness. Vitamin and mineral supplements are taken regularly under the supervision of the surgeon and dietitian. This ensures healthy weight loss without nutritional deficiencies.

How Much Weight Can Be Lost After Gastric Bypass?

Within the first 1–2 years after Gastric Bypass surgery, approximately 50–100% of excess weight can be lost. The rate of weight loss is directly related to adherence to the post-surgery nutrition plan and regular physical activity.

For example, a patient starting the surgery at 120 kg may lose an average of 50–60 kg by the end of the process.
